Emergency Preparedness Series: Part 10 - Self-defense and personal security measures

In an emergency, personal safety is paramount. Ensuring you and your family are

equipped with self-defense knowledge and security measures can make a significant difference in high-stress situations. This post will cover some self-defense techniques, recommended tools, and proactive security measures to keep you safe.

Emergencies can escalate quickly, leading to potential threats from individuals seeking to exploit the situation. Understanding these threats helps you prepare effectively.

Home Invasions: During natural disasters or civil unrest, home invasions may become more likely. As people begin to run out of essentials they will begin to risk going out to find what they need.  In the immediate hours, days, and months those that haven’t prepared may attempt to capitalize on the intial chaos of the event.

Personal Assaults: Increased stress and scarcity of resources can lead to heightened tensions and potential assaults. Don’t underestimate what people will do under duress.  Your neighbors are friendly today, but in a situation where there is increased stress that friendly demeanor could change.

Theft and Vandalism: Opportunistic crimes such as theft and vandalism can occur when security is compromised.

Basic Self Defense

Knowing some basic self-defense techniques can empower you to protect yourself and your loved ones.  There are a lot of way to get training in basic self-defense.  The important thing to remember is that your ego will get you killed, and you don’t have to fight a fight that didn’t happen.  Walk away, avoid others if can and don’t let your pride or ego get the best of you.

  • Awareness: Stay aware of your surroundings. Situational awareness can often prevent an attack before it happens.

    • Simple Techniques: Learn and practice basic moves such as:

    • Palm Heel Strike: Target the attacker’s nose or chin.

    • Elbow Strike: Use your elbow to strike the attacker’s jaw or temple.

    • Knee Strike: Aim for the groin or thigh.

  • Escape Moves: Focus on moves that allow you to break free and escape, such as wrist releases and choke defenses.

Self Defense Tools

Of course, sometimes you may not be able to avoid a conflict and you might have to engage. Carrying self-defense tools can provide an added layer of security.

  • Firearms: Can be a powerful tool for self-defense, offering a significant deterrent and protection capability. However, their use requires thorough training.  If you go this route, get training.  Period.

  • Pepper Spray: Easy to carry and effective in incapacitating an attacker.  Use caution as back spray can also affect you.

  • Personal Alarms: Emit a loud noise to deter attackers and attract attention.

  • Tactical Flashlight: Can be used to disorient an attacker and illuminate dark areas.

  • Self-Defense Keychains: Tools like Kubotans can be effective in close encounters.

Home Security Measures

Implementing security measures at home can deter potential threats and protect your property.

  • Secure Entry Points: Reinforce doors and windows with strong locks and security bars.

  • Alarm Systems: Install a reliable alarm system with motion detectors and cameras.

  • Exterior Lighting: Use motion-activated lights to illuminate dark areas around your home.

  • Safe Room: Designate a secure room in your home where you can retreat in case of an invasion.

Personal Security While Traveling

Maintaining personal security extends beyond the home, especially when traveling. I'll be covering this topic more in future posts but for now.

  • Travel in Groups: There’s safety in numbers. Avoid traveling alone, especially in unfamiliar areas.

  • Stay Connected: Keep family or friends informed of your whereabouts.

  • Be Discreet: Avoid displaying valuables and be cautious when using public transportation.

Training and Preparedness

Regular training and preparedness can boost your confidence and effectiveness in an emergency.

  • Self-Defense Classes: Enroll in local self-defense classes to learn techniques from professionals.

  • Family Drills: Conduct regular safety drills with your family to practice responses to various scenarios.

  • Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts readily available and ensure everyone knows how to reach them.

Self-defense and personal security are critical components of emergency preparedness. By equipping yourself with the right knowledge, tools, and training, you can enhance your ability to protect yourself and your loved ones in any situation.

Stay prepared, stay resilient.
